Is anyone familiar with the details of Doug Lindberg's death? An article here says he died in the 80's, but I lived in Palatine in the 70's and thought I remembered the incident ocurring then. Any help appreciated.

Yes, Doug Lindberg drowned in the early 70s (1973??). He was trying to rescue two kids stranded on a raft in the middle of one of the quarries.

Sorry I did not reply sooner. He died of an asthma attack after he saved two kids from drowning in Lake Louise in 1972. The kids were named Carpenter (one was named Pamela) and they lived across the street from me when I lived there. Doug used to ride me around the neighborhood on his bicycle and he was a lot older than I was. He was the first friend I ever had.

Hello , My name is Susan Carpenter, Now that I am 51 years old I am ready to share my story. I was 10 years .6 months old when the accident happened. There was a hand full of us playing at the creek on a summers day..June 1972. Jim M.(10) asked me to go on his new raft....leaving the children(Pam5)and a few others To be with the gang at the creek. Far left side of Lake Louise.....on raft with a current taking me to the sewer system towards Lake Louise School.Jim was able to swim out of the current to the other side of lake of Hwy 53 side.allowing him a brief struggle and to pass out a lake side until discovered . Having a very difficult time in the ambulance next to me with fluid in his lungs. He was to be kept at hospital. Dougie was removed be rescue team ,in front of the crowded on-lookers. already gone. We were taken to Northwest Hospital.Where I was to hear the last rights. A pre-Olympian trained athlete ,came to a make a rescue and to remain a Hero.Forfeiting his life for mine.Giving me a tremendous amount of hope that I would not suffer to much longer. As he was to surrender to my weight.Promising he would bring back help. At 3pm the struggle had been going on since 1pm. Gary (27) A guest at the "Augues Family Home .Jumping in his Jeep to lakeside. And started swimming to respond to my plead for help.....did the trained response to a drowning child.Pulled me under and protected himself from a desperate situation. Douglas has been with me in spirit and held my hand threw those few hours and future trials for years to come.Losing my parents, cancer and other tragic situations. My guardian angel...ever reminding me of a special spirituality that comes from up above.
I moved away to England when I became of age.To remove myself from the taunting of being called a "Killer Girl"threw my school years.Returning to the ongoing struggles of survivors guilt. And to response to the previous statement of report . Doug was home that day from track practice because of a hockey injury to his nose.Causing stress to his breathing. And I was a sweet little 10 year old desperate Asking for what I know today as a "Miracle"
And today,I am a community instructor for Children's Garden Programs .Often taking my students swimming at the pool on hot days.I am now able to not fear the water.I was saved that day to become a special gift for surfing children.A wounded-healer for grieving children. When I tell my story to the broken hearted. They tell me how lucky I was. and it brings them hope of their trial. And for that I will always do my very best for others in need. The Douglas C.Lindberg Award at Palatine High :A Honorary Scholarship for two track &field students,on behalf the memory of a fine example of sportsmanship. A humble gift my brother Patrick announces,at the yearly event. For we will forever remember "Dougie" for his encouraging and gentle love. His tombstone wrote a truth about that day.Where he is resting at the cemetery on Rand Road ,some 41 years ago.
A gift that he would offer to mark such a tremendous day in our families life

Susan,
Thanks for the detailed story. I have always wondered what the actual story was, I only heard it second hand. We moved out of the neighborhood in 1971 - the year before this happened. We lived across the street from you- our house was the one with the slightly larger corner lot that is across from the entrance to the park on Sandborn Dr. We lived there a couple of years. You may remember my brother Tom, he was close to your age. Your sister Pam and I ran away from home one time, we got pretty far from the neighborhood before my parents found us.
I was never allowed near the creek. One time I went over there and filled a bucket with water and when my mother found out I got in a lot of trouble. Like I said, I was friends with Doug, he used to ride me around on his bike, as I imagine many other kids did. He was the first friend I ever had.
I have never fogetten about those days so long ago. Take care.

To All... My name is Mark Carpenter my nick name back then was Keba. Many of us had nick names in those days. Dougs nick name was Huck. He saved my sister and Jim's life that day (42 years ago this week) after seeing them struggle after playing on a raft . I was at his side when the rescue team brought him to the surface and then to shore. I will never forget his long wet hair and peaceful look on his face. He was gone and life changed that day forever for those who knew him. NOTE the large boulder by the creek (still there today) reads "no greater a gift a man can give, then his own life for his brethren" that was Huck. He was a leader among us kids in the hood, organizing track meets all summer long year after year. Making trophies out of scrap wood to give out after a meet. I have one still on my mantle today. It stills pains me but I am grateful to Huck for saving Susan and Jim. I love you Susan...Mark

I remember Doug to this day. He was in my high school class (Palatine 74). I do remember Doug threw a wicked dodge ball....the fastest I had ever seen. He was somewhat quiet, thin, but very powerful. Such a loss.

It does not surprise me that he would reach out to someone in need as he seemed to be that type of person. Such a loss.

My son practices soccer at the field in Doug Lindbergh Park. and I saw the rock with the inscription and wondered about it. What exactly was the emergency situation - Did the raft overturn or were the kids just scared?
